Southern Light Vineyards Ghostgum Pinot Noir 2024
Region: Victoria
Sub Region: Main Ridge, Mornington Peninsula
Variety: Pinot Noir
Country: Australia
Vintage: 2024
The Wine
Main Ridge remains the spiritual home of Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir. With elevations exceeding 250 metres, cooling maritime influences from Bass Strait and deep volcanic soils, the region consistently produces wines of perfume, structure and remarkable longevity. Southern Light Vineyards is a tiny producer dedicated entirely to expressing this unique cool-climate terroir, with production measured in only a few hundred cases.
Ghostgum Pinot Noir is sourced from mature estate vines planted on red volcanic soils that naturally limit vigour and produce small, intensely flavoured berries. The extended growing season allows fruit to ripen slowly, building complexity while retaining freshness and fine natural acidity.
Fruit is hand harvested and fermented in small open fermenters, with careful extraction designed to preserve perfume and site expression rather than build weight. Maturation in French oak, only a portion of which is new, adds subtle complexity while allowing the vineyard character to remain front and centre.
This is a remarkably complete Pinot Noir, combining concentration with elegance and demonstrating exactly why Main Ridge continues to produce some of Australia's most compelling examples of the variety.
Cellared Says
This isn't simply another Mornington Pinot. It has genuine depth and concentration, yet never loses its balance or composure. The Decanter recognition is thoroughly deserved, and considering the tiny production, I suspect this wine won't remain under the radar for very long.
Reviews
"Very ripe and densely concentrated, powered by a fine seam of oak and polished creamy texture. Unique and world class."
97 Points, Platinum Medal – Decanter World Wine Awards
Comes from three separate blocks contributing to the final blend with the oak contribution about twenty-five percent new and it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. So you’re getting a pretty expressive look into the vineyard here. It’s quite a strong and almost assertive Pinot, yet there is a delicious sweet cherry raspberry fruit richness on the palate balanced by a fine chalky acidity and a nice touch of integrated oak. It all comes together and harnesses through to a sustained long finish. Impeccably balanced and poised.
