The Wine

Sandhi grew from Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman’s shared interest in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that express the cooler vineyards of Santa Barbara County. The project has played an important part in the wider conversation about freshness, texture and site in Californian wine.

The 2021 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay is particularly interesting for its vineyard sources. The blend comes primarily from Domaine de la Côte, supplemented by Hines Family Estate. These sites place the wine within the appellation’s Pacific-influenced landscape, where cool air encourages a long growing season and the retention of acidity.

Indigenous-yeast fermentation in oak puncheons, followed by further maturation in tank, builds texture while preserving definition. The result has the substance and detail to reward attention: white peach, apple and candied citrus, with freshly baked bread, subtle matchstick and a saline edge.

The palate is medium-bodied, with a focused line of acidity and a little textural grip. Erin Brooks found it complex but immediately enjoyable, while Decanter highlighted its combination of sleek shape, richness and mineral intensity. With some bottle age already behind it, this offers an engaging introduction to Sandhi’s approach, with further medium-term development ahead.

Cellared Says

This is the Sandhi I’d start with. The Domaine de la Côte fruit gives the regional bottling a particularly interesting pedigree, and 2021 is a persuasive year for this style. There’s generosity here, with the flinty, salty detail that makes coastal Californian Chardonnay so engaging. I’d be very happy to put this beside good Australian Chardonnay and let the conversation run. A useful bottle for anyone wanting to understand why Sta. Rita Hills has become such an important name for the variety.
