Sandhi Romance Pinot Noir 2021
Region: California
Sub Region: Romance Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills
Variety: Pinot Noir
Country: USA
Vintage: 2021
Style: Savoury dry red
The Wine
Romance Pinot Noir comes from a newer parcel beneath the Domaine de la Côte vineyards, planted to both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The 2021 was the fourth vintage of this small Sandhi bottling, offering an increasingly individual expression of the far western Sta. Rita Hills.
This is an important part of California’s coastal Pinot landscape. Sandhi’s work here places particular emphasis on the character of individual parcels and the influence of a cool, ocean-facing growing environment. Romance gives that approach a specific vineyard identity.
The producer describes 2021 as more savoury than earlier releases, with charred earth beneath pomegranate, rose petal and cola. Red berries, citrus and floral notes add lift, while a briny quality and persistent tannins keep the palate focused. There is delicacy in the aromatics, with enough grip to give the wine shape and staying power.
Only 267 cases were produced. JamesSuckling.com awarded 94 points, describing a linear, tightly drawn Pinot with crushed-stone character. Sandhi recommends decanting before serving, making this a wine to follow slowly as it opens, or to continue developing over the medium term.
Cellared Says
Romance gives a particularly interesting glimpse into the Domaine de la Côte world. It comes from a parcel below those celebrated vineyards, with its own savoury, briny personality. I like this for the Pinot drinker who wants to get past broad ideas about California and start following individual sites. There’s lift here, but also tannin and a little grit to keep your attention. Decant it and take your time. A small bottling with something distinctive to say.

“Sliced-strawberry, citrus, floral and meaty aromas follow through to a medium body with crushed-stone character.”
