Sandhi Romance Chardonnay 2021
Region: California
Sub Region: Romance Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills
Variety: Chardonnay
Country: USA
Vintage: 2021
Style: Concentrated dry white
The Wine
Romance is a small, estate-grown Chardonnay from the Domaine de la Côte property at the western edge of Sta. Rita Hills. It sits among the more ambitious vineyard-specific wines in the Sandhi range, bringing the influence of this celebrated coastal site into especially close focus.
The vineyard lies within the cool, windswept landscape that helped establish Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman’s reputation in Santa Barbara County. The proximity of the Pacific provides an important context for a Chardonnay that combines considerable fruit concentration with persistent freshness.
The 2021 is layered and expressive. Apricot, quince and ripe orchard fruit are joined by almond, pastry and a touch of matchstick, with a savoury, saline thread running through the palate. Barrel maturation contributes texture, while the wine’s acidity gives definition to its breadth.
Erin Brooks awarded 96+ points, highlighting its concentrated core, satiny texture and long, energetic finish. JamesSuckling.com rated it 97 points. Together, the reviews describe a wine with both immediate complexity and the capacity to develop over many years.
Now several years from harvest, Romance remains a compelling Chardonnay for considered cellaring. Brooks’ published drinking window extends to 2040; it also merits a generous glass and time to unfold when opened earlier.
Cellared Says
Romance is the Sandhi Chardonnay I’d put away. The site’s connection to Domaine de la Côte gives it obvious pedigree, and the 2021 has the concentration and energy to make patience worthwhile. This is a useful bottle for a Burgundy collector to explore: rich in detail, with that coastal saltiness pulling everything into focus. Give it a generous glass if opening now, then keep another for a few years. A very serious Chardonnay with a lot of pleasure ahead.
