The Wine

Rockford Basket Press Shiraz remains a standard-bearer for traditional Barossa winemaking. Fruit is sourced from established vineyards across the region, including parcels farmed by families who have supplied Rockford over multiple generations.

The wine is made at a deliberately human scale using open fermenters, traditional basket presses and seasoned oak. These methods preserve the character of the fruit while building the earthy complexity and supple structure for which Basket Press is known.

The 2022 is a particularly composed expression. Red and dark fruits are joined by plum kernel, warm spice and subtle savoury notes. At 13.8% alcohol, it carries concentration without excessive weight, moving across the palate with freshness, controlled tannins and a long, supple finish. It is less imposing than some young Basket Press releases, but more precise and quietly detailed.

Cellared Says

This is Basket Press for the cellar rather than immediate gratification. The 2022’s restraint, freshness and moderate alcohol give it excellent shape, but the wine remains tightly coiled. A long decant will help if opening now; the better decision is to leave it alone for at least five years and allow the savoury complexity to emerge.

Reviews

“Coiled and concentrated fruit runs across the palate with a subtlety that is neither heavy nor heady. This is a balanced release.”

94 Points – Sean Mitchell, Grape Observer

94 Points – Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

94 Points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review
