Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 1999
Region: Barossa Valley
Sub Region: Barossa (multi-site)
Variety: Shiraz
Country: Australia
Vintage: 1999
The Wine
The same traditional Rockford formula applies here: selected old-vine Barossa Shiraz, open-ferment handling, basket pressing and extended maturation in seasoned French and American oak. For 1999, publicly available technical summaries describe a mild, even season that produced a more classically proportioned Basket Press, with moderate alcohol and very good balance. It is one of the mature museum-style vintages that collectors continue to chase, and it remains a classified Rockford release in the secondary market.
Cellared Says
This is exactly the sort of mature Basket Press that reminds you why the wine has such a following. It is less about sheer size at this point and more about savoury complexity, balance and old-school Barossa charm.
Reviews
This still young, full-bodied, pure, incredibly rich 1999 exhibits a kinky nose of Asian spices, ground pepper, flowers, and autumnal forest floor notes. It possesses an inky/blue/purple color, full body, fabulous fruit, good acidity, sweet tannin, and a long finish. As it sat in the glass, a licorice component took over from the forest floor character. This is an impressive, still youthful Shiraz from one of the legendary wine producers of the Barossa. Give it another 3-4 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following two decades. P.S. This was a half bottle! - 93+ points Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
