Pyramid Valley Angel Flower Pinot Noir 2023
Region: Waikari, North Canterbury, New Zealand
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2023
The Wine
Biodynamic. Angel Flower — named for yarrow, a delicate white-blossomed plant central to biodynamic preparation 502 — is the most perfumed of Pyramid Valley’s Pinot sites. Planted in 2000 at 11,111 vines per hectare, this 0.7-hectare north-facing vineyard lies at the southern tip of the estate. The slope is steep and exposed, with coarser soils and just 15 % clay, resulting in lifted aromatics and a silkier texture than its sibling, Earth Smoke.
The 2023 Angel Flower bursts from the glass with scents of peonies, dried herbs and summer berries layered over flint and forest floor. The palate flows effortlessly — pure red fruit, savoury spice and iodine-tinged minerality glide across a seamless frame of fine tannin. It is at once delicate and powerful, a wine of balance and inner luminosity.
Cellared Says
As ethereal as its name, Angel Flower 2023 dances between perfume and poise — the essence of Waikari captured in satin and stone. Super complex, concentrated and balanced, fine tannins to super long, finish. Stunning. Drink 2025–2037.
Wine Reviews
“The 2023 Angel Flower is dense yet elegant, with the natural tension of its site restraining its fullness to maintain focus and poise. Offers an understated nose, concentrated flavours of red cherry and rhubarb and resonant woody herbs on the long, sinewy finish. Light, chalky tannins and fresh acidity meet to provide texture and pull in this soulful New Zealand Pinot.” — Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous 94 pts
