Region: Piedmont
Sub Region: Barbaresco DOCG – Ovello MGA
Variety: Nebbiolo
Country: Italy
Vintage: 2021

The Wine

Ovello occupies the northernmost part of the Barbaresco commune and is the largest of the vineyards represented in the Produttori Riserva collection. Its varied south-west and south-east exposures rise between 250 and 320 metres, making it one of the higher and generally cooler sites around the village.

Calcareous soils with a higher clay content give Ovello both body and a particularly assertive tannic structure. The cooler microclimate slows the growing cycle, preserving aromatic freshness while producing youthful, energetic fruit. In the best vintages, Ovello can be both exuberant and severe: bright fruit through the centre, with firm tannins and pronounced mineral tension on the finish.

The 2021 vintage suits the vineyard particularly well. Small berries and strong phenolic concentration provided structure, while cool September nights protected acidity and aromatic detail.

The wine was fermented at approximately 30°C with 28 days on skins, followed by full malolactic fermentation and at least 30 months in large oak casks. This restrained élevage leaves Ovello’s cooler, stony character clearly visible.

Where Montestefano is broad and commanding, Ovello is more linear and energetic. The 2021 is built around red fruit, citrus peel, chalk, spice and a long, tightly wound tannic finish.

Cellared Says

Ovello is one of the most compelling wines in this release. It has power, but the defining quality is tension: bright fruit, lifted aromatics and a firm mineral line that refuses to become heavy. An excellent choice for collectors who prefer Nebbiolo with energy and precision.

Reviews

“Medium-bodied, the palate has beautiful brightness, with hints of apricot and stone fruit along with a more linear, elegant structure.”

98 Points – Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com

“Captivating aromas of dark culinary spice, underbrush, rose and mentholated notes.”

97 Points – Kerin O’Keefe, KO Wine
