The Wine
Muncagota faces fully south-east, receiving the gentler morning sun before falling into shade later in the afternoon. Sitting between 250 and 300 metres, it is consequently cooler than many of Barbaresco’s south- and south-west-facing crus and produces one of the most aromatic and finely drawn wines in the Produttori collection.
The soils are calcareous with relatively little sand. Their high calcium content gives the wine firm, focused tannins, while the cooler exposure encourages floral, herbal and balsamic aromas—often rose, mint, eucalyptus and brushwood. Muncagota was first released by Produttori in 1967 under the former name Moccagatta; the modern spelling reflects the officially recognised Piedmontese form of the vineyard name.
In 2021, the cru’s natural freshness is matched by greater concentration and tannic authority than usual. The vintage delivered small berries, balanced ripeness and strong phenolic development, creating a Muncagota with elegance on the surface but a serious structural core beneath it.
Fermentation took place at approximately 30°C with 28 days of skin contact, followed by malolactic fermentation and at least 30 months in large oak casks.
This is not simply the light or delicate wine of the collection. Its floral lift and cooling herbal character are supported by firm tannins, lively acidity and enough depth to evolve for many years.

Muncagota is the cru to choose for perfume and finesse, although the 2021 has considerably more backbone than that description might imply. It is lifted, savoury and wonderfully distinctive—the most immediately recognisable vineyard personality among these four Cru releases.
