The Wine
Produttori del Barbaresco’s single-cru Riservas offer one of the clearest studies of terroir in Piedmont. The wines are made using the same traditional methods, leaving the vineyard’s exposure, soil and microclimate to determine the differences in the glass.
Montefico lies between Montestefano and Ovello, on a small south- and south-east-facing vineyard between 230 and 260 metres. The exposure is warm, but cooler northern air can move through the narrow valley separating Barbaresco and Neive, moderating the vineyard during the growing season. Its calcareous soils are high in calcium, producing powerful tannins, pronounced minerality and a style that can appear austere in youth.
Compared with the broader, fleshier Montestefano, Montefico is typically more linear and mineral. It is one of the most classical wines in the range: firm, detailed and slow to reveal itself, with complexity building behind its tannic structure rather than through immediate fruit sweetness.
The 2021 was fermented at approximately 30°C with 28 days of skin contact, underwent full malolactic fermentation and matured for at least 30 months in large oak casks.
The quality of the vintage has given Montefico unusual depth without softening its identity. It remains disciplined and tightly framed, but there is enough fruit and mid-palate concentration to support a long evolution in bottle.
Cellared Says
Montefico may be the purist’s choice within this release. It is less immediately generous than Montestefano, but arguably even more precise: limestone, herbs, red fruit and formidable tannin arranged around a long mineral core. One to buy for the cellar rather than tonight’s dinner.
