Produttori del Barbaresco Pora Riserva 2021

$199.00

Region: Piedmont
Sub Region: Barbaresco — Pora MGA
Variety: Nebbiolo
Country: Italy
Vintage: 2021

The Wine

Pora occupies a broad slope descending towards the Tanaro River. Its proximity to the water brings milder summer mornings, increased humidity and more fertile soils than many of Barbaresco’s higher, more exposed crus. Limestone-rich clay and sand contribute to a naturally generous expression of Nebbiolo with broader fruit and comparatively gentle tannins.

The vineyard has deep historical significance. It featured on the work of Domizio Cavazza, the pioneering figure who helped define Barbaresco in the late nineteenth century, and Produttori has bottled Pora separately since the earliest years of its cru program. The 2021 received the estate’s traditional long maceration and at least 30 months in large oak.

Raspberry, Morello cherry and strawberry lead into violet, blood orange, star anise, leather and subtle balsamic spice. The palate is rounded and resonant at first, before the vintage’s chalky tannins and mineral definition become apparent. Pora is often among the earliest Produttori Riservas to show its charm, but this 2021 has sufficient structure and precision for a long evolution.

Cellared Says

Pora is often the smartest first purchase in a Produttori Riserva release. It offers the history, traditional winemaking and cellar potential of the range, but with a more generous welcome than the sterner crus. The 2021 is particularly well judged: fragrant and approachable, yet far from simple. Drink after a generous decant or cellar confidently.
