The Wine
Founded in 1958 by 19 growers, Produttori del Barbaresco has become one of the great cooperative estates of the wine world. Its single-vineyard Riservas are made only in selected vintages, allowing each cru to be seen through the same traditional winemaking lens.
Montestefano is among the most powerful of the nine crus and has long been known as the “Barolo of Barbaresco”. Its steep south- and south-east-facing slopes lie between 230 and 280 metres, with calcium-rich limestone soils and excellent drainage. The warmer exposure produces deeply flavoured Nebbiolo with full body, ripe tannins and a darker, more muscular profile than most Barbaresco vineyards.
The 2021 season produced smaller berries with excellent phenolic concentration, supported by cool nights during the final stages of ripening. The result is a structured, age-worthy vintage with the freshness required to balance Montestefano’s natural power.
Fermentation took place at approximately 30°C with 28 days on skins, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then matured for at least 30 months in large 25–50 hectolitre oak casks, preserving the vineyard’s fruit, tannin and mineral character rather than imposing new-oak flavour.
Cellared Says
This is the Produttori cru for the committed Barolo drinker. Montestefano brings weight, tannin and longevity, but still carries the floral lift and brightness that distinguish Barbaresco. It will be formidable young; the reward will come with patient cellaring.
