The Wine

This is the wine upon which Produttori del Barbaresco built its reputation. Made continuously since the cooperative’s foundation in 1958, it brings together Nebbiolo from member-owned vineyards throughout the Barbaresco DOCG rather than representing a single cru. The intention is not to create a lesser wine, but a complete expression of the appellation.

The vineyards sit on the limestone- and clay-based soils typical of Barbaresco, rich in calcium and threaded with sandy veins. Blending across different slopes and exposures gives the wine greater balance than any single site could provide: perfume from cooler vineyards, fruit and breadth from warmer exposures, and the tannic structure required for ageing.

The 2022 was fermented in stainless steel at approximately 28°C, spending 24 days on skins with regular pump-overs. It was then matured in large oak casks, preserving Nebbiolo’s rose, red-fruit and savoury character without introducing obvious new-oak flavour.

The warm vintage has produced a richer and more textural expression than the tightly structured 2021. Dark cherry, plum, spice and liquorice sit within a broad frame of ripe tannin, but the wine retains enough acidity and aromatic freshness to remain recognisably Barbaresco. Some wine originally considered for Riserva lots was included in the blend, adding an extra level of depth.

Cellared Says

This remains one of Piedmont’s great value wines. It offers the farming, traditional winemaking and cellar pedigree of one of Barbaresco’s benchmark producers without the price attached to the individual Riservas. Approachable enough to enjoy with a decant, but serious enough to age for a decade or more.

Reviews

“Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice and mocha build as the 2022 shows off its considerable depth.”

93 Points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“Ripe raspberry liqueur, fresh cherries, sweet herbs and pressed flowers.”

92 Points – Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com
