The Wine

Cuvée Louise is Pommery’s prestige Champagne, created in tribute to Madame Louise Pommery and drawn from carefully selected parcels in just three Grand Cru villages: Avize, Cramant and Aÿ.

Chardonnay from Avize and Cramant provides its precision and chalky framework, while Pinot Noir from Aÿ brings depth and structure. The Parcelles designation highlights the exacting vineyard selection behind the wine, with individual sites chosen for their ability to express Pommery’s most refined style.

The 2008 combines 65% Chardonnay with 35% Pinot Noir. A cool growing season followed by favourable harvest conditions produced the freshness and balance that distinguish this benchmark Champagne vintage. Long maturation in Pommery’s chalk cellars has developed considerable aromatic complexity while preserving its firm, energetic structure.

Toasted bread, roasted hazelnut and almond lead into vanilla, malt, dried fruit and citrus. The palate is refined and exceptionally long, with creamy texture balanced by insistent acidity and a refreshingly dry finish. Restrained dosage allows the Grand Cru fruit and mature complexity to remain clearly defined.

Cellared Says

A substantial prestige release, now supported by a superb 98-point assessment from Huon Hooke. Louise 2008 combines mature, nutty complexity with the freshness and firm structure that make the vintage so compelling. This is a wine, the fact it has a fine bead of bubbles and Champagne on the label shouldn’t distract its vinous intent. Its smart, poised, powerful, tense and very persistent. Like all good wines give it a little air and let it show itself. Simply stunning. Recommend decanting for the full theatrics.

This deserves food and a generous glass: turbot, scallops, grilled lobster or roast poultry would all work beautifully. Enjoy now–2031.

Reviews

“Medium-full straw-yellow, bright in the glass. The bouquet is toasty and nutty, with toasted bread, roasted hazelnut and toasted almond aromas, vanilla and malt among the subtle dried fruit nuances. The wine is refined in texture and very very long, with a refreshingly dry balance and mouth-puckering feel, the insistent acidity drying and cleansing the aftertaste. The firmness of the follow-through invites food. Impressive wine indeed.”
