The Wine
Apanage Brut 1874 represents a contemporary chapter in Pommery’s history. Introduced to celebrate 150 years since Madame Pommery’s pioneering dry Champagne, it brings together the house’s historic vineyard sources, selected vintage reserves and a modern emphasis on texture, freshness and savoury detail.
The blend draws on 17 crus, including the remarkable Clos Pompadour within the Pommery estate in Reims. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir form its backbone, complemented by Meunier from the Montagne de Reims and Grande Vallée de la Marne.
The published assemblage is centred on 2018, supported by wines from 2015 and 2012 and the house’s perpetual reserve. This reserve is maintained across successive harvests, adding continuity and layers of mature flavour. Extended ageing in the Butte Saint-Nicaise chalk cellars and restrained dosage complete the wine.
White flowers, jasmine and ripe lemon lead into nectarine, acacia honey and brioche. The palate opens with a delicately buttery texture, then gains definition through citrus freshness, mineral tension and a persistent, savoury finish.
Presented in its gift box.
Cellared Says
A compelling step into Pommery’s more ambitious range. The combination of selected vintages and perpetual reserve brings depth, while the house’s characteristic freshness keeps the wine poised. Tasted blind in our annual Champagne panel tasting, my joint top score in Brut NV.
This has the texture for lobster, roast poultry or richer fish dishes, and the polish for an excellent Champagne gift. Enjoy now or cellar for another five to seven years.
Reviews
“An elegant, charming bouquet with subtle yeast notes, fresh white bread, dried citrus fruits, a hint of pear, and orange blossom…”
93 points — Hans-Martin Gesellmann, Falstaff
“A study in detail, this is utterly delicious and quietly refined.”
92 points — Anna-Christina Cabrales, Wine Enthusiast
