The Wine

Apanage 1874 Rosé extends Pommery’s contemporary gastronomic range into a layered, finely textured rosé. Chardonnay supplies precision and lift, while Pinot Noir and Meunier contribute fruit depth and structure.

The published assemblage combines wines from the 2017, 2018 and 2019 harvests. Its red-wine component comes from Bouzy and Verzenay, two celebrated Montagne de Reims villages whose Pinot Noir brings aromatic intensity and a firm framework to the blend.

Carefully vinified still red wines are incorporated into the white Champagne assemblage, allowing precise control over colour, flavour and balance. The result is a rosé with considerable detail beneath its immediately inviting fruit.

Fresh raspberry, redcurrant and pink grapefruit meet rose, peony and subtle spice. Further complexity comes through dried red apple, buttery pastry, freshly baked biscuit and a suggestion of cinnamon. The palate is creamy and sophisticated, with delicate red fruit, citrus and stone fruit carried by an exceptionally fine, persistent mousse. Bright acidity and a saline finish keep the wine poised throughout.

Cellared Says

A serious rosé Champagne with the texture and complexity to carry a meal. The red fruit is beautifully integrated into the pastry, spice and citrus layers, while the fine mousse gives it a particularly polished feel.

Reviews

“A light rose-gold hue, with a very fine bead in the glass. Dried red apple and butter pastry aromatics. The palate is very sophisticated and detailed, with subtle red fruits balanced by citrus and stone fruits, and contrasting layers of freshly baked biscuits and a hint of cinnamon spice. The mousse is ultra-fine but very persistent, complementing a line of acidity that keeps it from sitting too heavy and works well to balance the dosage level.”
96 points — Stuart Knox, The Real Review

“An elegant, fresh bouquet of red fruits: wild raspberries, freshly grated lemon zest, subtle notes of toasted bread crust…”
93 points — Hans-Martin Gesellmann, Falstaff
