The Wine

Apanage 1874 Blanc de Blancs explores Chardonnay through the accumulated depth of Pommery’s reserve wines. Its foundation is a perpetual reserve originally established from Grand Cru Chardonnay and enriched over successive harvests.

The published assemblage incorporates 2014 and 2016 wines sourced exclusively from Avize and Cramant, two of the Côte des Blancs’ most distinguished Grand Cru villages. These reserves are combined with selected Chardonnay from 2018, bringing mature complexity into balance with fresh fruit and mineral definition.

Ripe citrus, bergamot and powdered almond are joined by baked green apple, lemon zest, shortcrust pastry and subtle brioche. The palate combines generosity with precision: apple and citrus form the core, with touches of stone fruit and biscuit developing around them.

Ultra-fine bubbles and a delicate line of acidity give the wine a remarkably light touch despite its depth. The finish is long, nuanced and saline, carrying the layered character of mature Chardonnay reserves while retaining a clear sense of freshness.

Cellared Says

A particularly persuasive Blanc de Blancs for drinkers who enjoy both Chardonnay freshness and developed Champagne complexity. There is real layering here, with apple, citrus and pastry held together by fine bubbles and a long, delicate finish. Another blind tasted winner from our recent panel tasting. This has such a smart structure underlying the lovely autolytic high notes all pulled along by fine but persistent stone and citrus.

A strong choice for scallops, butter-poached shellfish, lobster or simply an excellent aperitif. Ready to enjoy now.

Reviews

“A light straw-gold hue. Baked green apple, shortcrust pastry, and lemon zest aromas lift from the glass. There are layers and detail here that immediately focus your attention. Apple and citrus notes sit at the core, with a touch of stone fruit as well. Then it's lifted by ultra-fine bubbles and a delicate lace of acidity to keep it fresh and vibrant, while allowing some biscuity notes and hints of pastry to come to the fore as it flows along to a very, very long and delicate finish.”

“Dense, charming, nutty bouquet; delicately fresh brioche; freshly grated orange zest; baked apple; honeydew melon; candied citrus fruits.”
