The Wine

Place of Changing Winds is Robert Walters’ remarkable vineyard project in the southern foothills of Mount Macedon. Established in 2012 and managed with Rémi Jacquemain, the estate combines exceptionally close planting with painstaking organic viticulture. At around 500 metres elevation, its forest-fringed setting and quartz, sandstone and quartzite soils provide a distinctive foundation for Pinot Noir.

Between Two Mountains takes its name from the vineyard’s position between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook. The 2024 draws on parcels planted at densities between 10,000 and 25,000 vines per hectare, including fruit from sections that can contribute to Beyond the Forest.

The vintage delivered a tiny Pinot crop, followed by a long, mild ripening season. The resulting wine combines generous fruit with perfume, fine structure and freshness. Maturation extended to almost 30 months: approximately two years in oak, followed by six months in tank. Barrels ranged from 228 to 600 litres, with around 20% new oak, and the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

The 2024 is particularly inviting, with lifted aromatics and an open, expressive character. Its fruit depth is balanced by fine acidity and a savoury tannin line, giving it both immediate appeal and the capacity to develop.

Cellared Says

I was super impressed when I tasted this release. I loved the 2022, while the 2023 showed a tighter, finer and firmer side of the vineyard. The 2024 feels wonderfully open and generous, with the definition, lift and aromatic detail that make these wines so compelling.

I’ve admired Rob and the team’s work for a long time. Their willingness to pursue quality so thoroughly comes through here. This is the bottle I’d recommend opening now to understand what Place of Changing Winds is achieving, while keeping a few to follow over the next decade.
