The Wine

Founded in 1948 by Francis Usseglio after his move from Italy to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Pierre Usseglio has become one of the appellation's most respected family estates. Today, Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio continue the family's commitment to producing wines that combine concentration, authenticity and a strong sense of place.

Premier Pierre was first introduced in 2017 as a cuvée designed to capture the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape while offering earlier accessibility than some of the domaine's more structured bottlings. The fruit is sourced from a range of estate vineyards planted across the appellation, including parcels of old-vine Grenache rooted in the region's famous galet-strewn soils.

The official 2022 blend is led by 75% Grenache, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and a small amount of Clairette Blanche. Fruit is hand harvested, with approximately 60% destemmed, before fermentation and maceration lasting between 25 and 35 days. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, followed by élevage in a combination of concrete and large oak vessels designed to preserve freshness and vineyard character.

The 2022 vintage delivered wines of excellent ripeness and concentration, while retaining the freshness and balance that define the best modern Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Cellared Says

Premier Pierre is one of the smartest entries into serious Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It has all the generosity, spice and warmth people love about the region, but with enough polish and balance to make it genuinely compelling. A terrific drink now and over the next decade.
