The Wine
First produced in 1998, Cuvée de Mon Aïeul remains one of the benchmark Grenache wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is a tribute to Pierre Usseglio, the family's patriarch, and is sourced from some of the oldest Grenache vines in the estate, many planted between 1900 and 1940.
The vineyards are located on the classic galet roulés soils of La Crau and neighbouring sectors of the appellation. These rounded stones absorb heat during the day and release it overnight, promoting even ripening and contributing to the concentration for which the wine is renowned.
Unlike many modern prestige cuvées, Mon Aïeul is fundamentally about old-vine Grenache and terroir. Fermentation takes place in concrete, with élevage primarily in large old foudres and vats to preserve purity and avoid excessive oak influence. The result is a wine of extraordinary depth and concentration that still manages to retain freshness and balance.
The 2020 vintage is regarded as one of the strongest recent releases, combining richness and power with remarkable precision and energy.
