Piedrasassi Santa Barbara Syrah 2021
Region: Santa Barbara County, California, USA
Variety: Syrah
Vintage: 2021
The Wine
Sashi Moorman’s Piedrasassi project has redefined Californian Syrah, drawing from the region’s cool Pacific influence and old-world sensibility. The 2021 Santa Barbara Syrah is a blend of organically farmed sites across Los Alamos, Ballard Canyon, and Santa Maria, vinified with wild yeasts and around 50% whole cluster. The wine ferments in concrete before ageing for 18 months in neutral oak. Deep purple in hue, it opens with violets, olive tapenade, smoked herbs, and black cherry. The palate carries savoury depth and bright acidity, marrying Northern Rhône authenticity with Californian sunshine.
Cellared Says
Sashi Moorman crafts Syrah with purity, poise, and a whisper of the Pacific breeze. The 2021 vintage walks the line between power and restraint — supple fruit meets savoury spice, the finish alive with minerality and pepper. Drink 2024–2032.
Wine Reviews
“The 2021 Syrah Santa Barbara County is gorgeous. Whole clusters and a touch of reduction add striking aromatic top notes to a core of dark blue/purplish fruit. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. The 2021 is one of the best editions of this wine I can remember tasting.”
