Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz 2016
Region: South Australia
Sub Region: Barossa Valley
Variety: Shiraz
Country: Australia
Vintage: 2016
Style: Full-bodied, cellar-aged red
The Wine
RWT brings together the richness of Barossa Valley Shiraz and the structure of carefully selected French oak. Conceived as a dedicated regional expression within Penfolds, it has become one of the estate’s most recognisable premium reds, prized for its aromatic depth, generous texture and capacity to mature.
The 2016 growing season finished particularly well. After dry conditions early in the season, cooler weather in January and February provided relief. A relatively mild finish, without extreme heat, allowed even ripening and the development of flavour alongside firm, mature tannins.
The wine spent 12 months in French oak hogsheads, 72% new. This substantial oak component was matched by the concentration of the fruit, producing a wine with impressive depth and a remarkably polished texture.
Blackberry and plum are accompanied by cocoa, cedar, warm spice and floral notes. Beneath the richness lies a finely drawn tannin structure that carries the wine through a long, composed finish. As it develops, the fruit and oak gain increasingly savoury connections, bringing roasted nut, earthy and meaty nuances into focus.
Cellared Says
The 2016 is the RWT I’d be particularly interested in opening now. It has the depth expected of the label, together with a suppleness that makes the wine’s development especially appealing.
I like wines that can deliver generosity and still hold their shape, and that combination is central to the attraction here. A well-stored bottle should provide a rewarding introduction to mature RWT, with further drinking potential through the 2030s.
