The Wine
Nicole Lamarche produced only a tiny quantity of village Nuits-Saint-Georges in 2023. The fruit comes from organically farmed, approximately 40-year-old vines in Les Herbues and Aux Tuyaux, close to the northern edge of Nuits-Saint-Georges as the appellation approaches Vosne-Romanée. The soils here contain significant clay, naturally giving the wine more depth and structure than Lamarche’s lighter Côte de Nuits-Villages.
What makes the wine particularly interesting is the élevage. Roughly one-third was matured in Lamarche’s bespoke Italian amphorae, vessels she has increasingly incorporated into the cellar to preserve fruit purity and texture without adding oak flavour. This brings an unusual refinement to an appellation more commonly associated with muscular Pinot Noir.
There is still proper Nuits character—ripe red and darker fruit, earth and spice—but the tannins are unusually fine and the wine remains fluid rather than heavy. It is a lovely example of how Lamarche’s approach can reshape an appellation without erasing its identity.

This is fascinating Nuits-Saint-Georges. There is enough clay-derived depth to tell you where it comes from, but the amphora and Lamarche’s feather-light handling give it a finesse closer to northern Nuits and Vosne. Tiny production and one of the more distinctive village wines in the range.
