The Wine
Nicole Lamarche’s remarkable rise has been built around finesse rather than power. Her vineyards have been farmed organically since 2007, extraction has become progressively gentler, new oak restrained, and amphora increasingly important. Her newer négociant range follows the same philosophy, working with organic growers to produce wines with the same purity and lightness of touch as the domaine bottlings.
Les Vireuils is one of Meursault’s most interesting village lieux-dits. It sits high on the hillside, close to the forest above the village, where limestone-rich soils and the cooler position produce Chardonnay with greater tension and mineral definition than the broader, richer style often associated with Meursault. It is a site increasingly prized by collectors, with producers such as Roulot and Leroux also demonstrating just how serious Vireuils can be.
The 2023 is built around citrus and stone fruit rather than weight, with chalk, freshness and a long mineral line running through the palate. It is recognisably Meursault in texture, but the high slope and Lamarche’s restrained approach keep everything fine, energetic and precise.

A very smart way into serious Meursault. Vireuils has the pedigree to deliver far beyond village level, and Lamarche’s delicate winemaking is particularly well suited to this cooler, limestone-heavy site. More about tension, chalk and persistence than butter and oak—and all the better for it.
