The Wine
Tom Lubbe's Matassa has become one of Europe's most influential estates, inspiring a generation of growers through regenerative farming, low-intervention winemaking and an uncompromising focus on vineyard expression. Working from the tiny village of Calce in Roussillon, Lubbe farms some of the region's oldest vines on rugged limestone and marl soils that naturally produce wines of freshness despite the Mediterranean climate.
Matassa Rouge is sourced from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards planted to old-vine Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. The vineyards sit on limestone-rich soils at elevation, allowing slow ripening and exceptional natural balance.
Whole bunches are fermented with indigenous yeasts before maturation in concrete and old foudres. Sulphur additions are minimal and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration.
The result is a wine that combines remarkable perfume, freshness and drinkability with a level of complexity rarely found at this price.
Cellared Says
Tom Lubbe has become one of the most influential winemakers in Europe for good reason. His wines somehow manage to be both incredibly thoughtful and incredibly easy to drink. Matassa Rouge remains one of the great value bottles in France.
Reviews
"Brilliantly fresh and expressive, combining purity, finesse and exceptional energy."
