Massolino Barolo Parafada 2022
Region: Piedmont
Sub Region: Barolo DOCG – Parafada MGA, Serralunga d’Alba
Variety: Nebbiolo
Country: Italy
Vintage: 2022
The Wine
Parafada was the Massolino family’s first major cru acquisition in Serralunga and remains home to some of its oldest Nebbiolo. The 1.2-hectare parcel was planted in 1957, rising steeply from roughly 300 to 340 metres between Gabutti and Lazzarito, with a full southern exposure that captures maximum sunlight.
The soils are dense and highly calcareous, with clay and marl from the Formazione di Lequio. Combined with old vines, full sun and a ridge protected from wind, this naturally produces the most concentrated and powerful of Massolino’s three regularly released single-vineyard Barolos.
The wine undergoes traditional long fermentation and maceration in large oak vats before up to 30 months in large casks. Parafada usually requires more patience than Margheria, yet the 2022 vintage has softened some of those hard edges: the wine retains breadth and old-vine authority but is surprisingly open and harmonious already.
Cellared Says
The serious Serralunga choice. Old vines, full southern exposure and dense Lequio soils give Parafada more scale and tannin than Margheria. What makes the 2022 particularly attractive is that the power is already unusually well integrated. A substantial Barolo, but not an aggressive one. Approachable and compelling.
Reviews
“Sweet red cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco and mint open with some coaxing.”
94 Points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“Expressive raspberry fruit… lots of fine, chewy tannins. Long and deep.”
17+ Points – Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com
