Massolino Barolo Margheria 2022
Region: Piedmont
Sub Region: Barolo DOCG – Margheria MGA, Serralunga d’Alba
Variety: Nebbiolo
Country: Italy
Vintage: 2022
The Wine
Margheria is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s great historic vineyards and perhaps the most elegant expression in Massolino’s cru range. The family acquired its first parcel in 1964 and expanded during the 1970s; today the holding remains just 1.5 hectares at approximately 280 metres elevation.
The difference is in the soil. Margheria remains strongly calcareous but contains more sand than Massolino’s other Serralunga sites. That sand softens the naturally stern architecture of Serralunga Nebbiolo, while high calcium content retains mineral drive and tannic freshness. The result can be almost Burgundian in perfume and texture—arguably the most “Chambolle-like” Barolo in the portfolio.
Fermentation and long maceration take place in large oak vats at around 30°C, followed by up to 30 months in large casks and further bottle maturation. There is no attempt to disguise the vineyard with small oak: dark red fruit, iron, herbs and pepper sit over a distinctly stony mineral backbone.
Cellared Says
If Parafada is power, Margheria is finesse. It still has unmistakable Serralunga tannin, but the sandy component of the soils gives it perfume, lift and a wonderfully refined texture. For Burgundy drinkers exploring serious Barolo, this is the Massolino cru I’d reach for first.
Reviews
“The 2022 Barolo Margheria is laced with dark red fruit, iron, mint, white pepper, slate and dried herbs. As always, the Margheria presents a decidedly savory, mineral-driven side of Barolo and Serralunga. Beams of tannin kick up the mid-palate through to the long, sustained finish. There are no hard edges or awkward contours here.”
93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“More immediately minerally and stony on the nose. Subdued raspberry fruit with a hint of leather and a suggestion of black pepper. Succulent on the palate with compact raspberry fruit and gripping tannins. Long and with an imposing structure that nevertheless is still complementary to the fruit.”
