The Wine

Massolino’s classic Barolo has been produced since 1911 and remains one of the best introductions to traditional Serralunga. Fruit comes from around seven hectares, principally Briccolina, Collareto, Broglio and Le Turne, with smaller contributions from Parussi and declassified Vigna Rionda. Collareto neighbours Vigna Rionda while Le Turne borders Margheria—serious vineyard material for an estate Barolo.

The 2022 growing season brought severe drought and heat, with lower yields across the estate. Massolino nevertheless reported healthy fruit with good concentration and balance, and the resulting wines are striking for their finesse rather than the heaviness one might expect from the year.

Vines range from roughly 10 to 55 years. The fruit spent 10–12 days on skins, with fermentation split between concrete and large wooden vats. The wine matured for 30 months in large 40–100 hectolitre French, Austrian and Slavonian oak, keeping the élevage firmly traditional while introducing a broader range of large-cask cooperage than in previous vintages.

Cellared Says

Do not overlook this because it says simply “Barolo”. The vineyard sources include some exceptional real estate, and Massolino has produced a remarkably fine, transparent wine from a difficult season. This is exactly what estate Barolo should offer: pedigree, proper élevage and genuine cellar potential without cru pricing.

Reviews

“Crushed flowers, bright acids, small red berry fruit and a kick of white pepper lend energy throughout.”

91 Points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“Finely polished tannins and supple raspberry fruit. Great length and precision.”

17++ Points – Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com
