Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Les Safres” 2023
Region: Southern Rhône
Sub Region: Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Variety: Grenache
Country: France
Vintage: 2023
The Wine
Les Safres is sourced primarily from old-vine Grenache planted on sandy soils (“safres”) in the cooler northern sectors of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These sandier terroirs tend to produce wines of greater perfume, finesse and aromatic lift compared to the denser, stone-driven styles from galet-heavy vineyards.
The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with hand harvesting and careful sorting. Fermentation takes place in concrete with a high proportion of whole bunches, followed by élevage in large old foudres and demi-muids to avoid overt oak influence.
Compared to Les Quartz, Les Safres is generally the more floral and immediately seductive wine in the range, emphasising red fruit, spice and silky tannin rather than sheer scale.
Cellared Says
If Les Quartz is the powerful side of Clos du Caillou, this is the graceful side. It has all the perfume and silkiness you hope great sandy-soil Grenache will deliver. Then amps up super fine tannin structure and acid line. A great wine and a very reasonable price.
Reviews
Mostly Grenache with a splash of Mourvèdre from the Les Bédines lieu-dit, brought up mostly in foudre, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Safres is similarly deeper ruby-hued and offers up a floral, peppery perfume of red plums, black raspberries, and spicy, herbes des Provence-like nuances. This medium to full-bodied red has a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel and terrific tannins.

Alluring 2023s and Benchmark 2010s (Nov 2024) Red-fruited and spicy, the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres displays lovely floral notes of rose petals and crushed violets. Packing ample freshness, the full-bodied and velvety 2023 carries spot-on balance and concludes with persistence on the alluring finale.
