The Wine

Les Quartz is one of Le Clos du Caillou’s flagship wines and is sourced from old-vine Grenache and Syrah planted on the famous galet-strewn quartzite soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These rounded stones retain daytime heat and radiate it back through the evening, assisting full ripening while maintaining the wine’s structural backbone.

The estate farms organically and biodynamically, with hand harvesting and severe selection in the vineyard. Grenache is generally fermented with a significant proportion of whole bunches in concrete vats, while Syrah is vinified separately before blending. Elevage takes place primarily in large old foudres and demi-muids to preserve fruit definition and site expression.

Les Quartz is typically the more structured and mineral expression in the range, carrying dark fruit, spice, lavender and a strong stony framework beneath the fruit weight.

Cellared Says

This is serious Châteauneuf with genuine cellar credentials. Powerful, yes, but also properly structured and site-driven. I thought the Safres was simply gorgeous when tasting in the line up, but the Quartz was a distinct step up. Richness offset by a fine acid line, light on its feet this is superb modern CNDP.

Reviews

'The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz is another standout, bursting with aromas of peonies, lilac, dark cherries, fresh thyme and exotic spices. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it offers a deeper, more powerful mid-palate than La Réserve, framed by velvety tannins that carry through to a long, penetrating and seemingly endless finish. A blend of 80% Grenache Noir and 20% Syrah, matured entirely in large and used barrels, this is the most mineral expression in the Vacheron cellar this year.’
96 points, Yohan Castaing, The Wine Advocate, October 2025.

'A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah from the Les Cassanets lieu-dit and all destemmed, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz is deep ruby-hued and offers a gorgeous nose of black raspberries, peppery garrigue, violets, and flowers. I love its complexity, and it's medium to full-bodied, has remarkable purity, and beautiful tannins.’
