The Wine
Joh. Jos. Prüm remains one of the defining estates of the Mosel, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr is its most celebrated vineyard. The spectacular south-west-facing slope rises directly above the Mosel at gradients of 60–100%, with vines rooted into rocky, weathered Devonian slate. The combination of extreme gradient, reflected heat from the river and slate’s ability to absorb warmth allows Riesling to ripen slowly while retaining the extraordinary acidity and delicacy that define the site.
The 2024 vintage is particularly well suited to Kabinett. After good winter and spring rainfall, the season progressed without the sustained heat seen in some recent years. A cooler September slowed ripening and rewarded patience, with Prüm beginning harvest on 1 October. Kabinett fruit was picked relatively early, preserving the lightness, acidity and transparency that Katharina Prüm sees as the defining strengths of the vintage.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr tends to give a rounder, more refined expression than neighbouring Graacher Himmelreich. In 2024 that comes through as white peach, mandarin, honeysuckle and fresh herbs over a distinctly smoky, slate-driven core. At just 8.5% alcohol, the wine has genuine sweetness but almost no sense of heaviness; acidity and mineral tension carry it through a long, finely etched finish.
This is classic Mosel Kabinett: intensity without weight, sweetness without cloying richness, and a remarkable ability to develop for decades.
Cellared Says
This is the sort of Riesling that makes the Mosel almost impossible to replicate anywhere else. It weighs next to nothing but has enormous flavour persistence and vineyard definition. The 2024 vintage has given Wehlener Sonnenuhr exactly what it needs—freshness, delicacy and slatey precision. Brilliant young, but this is also a wine you can confidently forget in the cellar for 10–20 years.
