The Wine
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the vineyard most closely identified with Joh. Jos. Prüm and one of the benchmark Riesling sites of the Mosel. Its spectacular south-west-facing slopes rise at gradients of up to 100%, with vines rooted in rocky, weathered Devonian slate directly above the Mosel. Long sunlight hours, reflected warmth from the river and slate soils allow fruit to achieve remarkable ripeness while the cool Mosel climate preserves acidity.
At Auslese level, 2024 shows just how profound that combination can be. There was effectively no botrytis involved, so the additional ripeness comes through as pure fruit concentration rather than honeyed richness. The wine moves beyond Spätlese in depth and texture but retains the fine line, lightness and clarity that define the vintage.
The difference between the two Prüm Auslesen is particularly clear. Where Graacher Himmelreich is citrussy, herbal and racy, Wehlener Sonnenuhr is deeper and more rounded, with white and golden peach, bergamot, citrus zest and floral notes wrapped around a powerful seam of crushed slate and salt.
Despite the Auslese designation, this remains extraordinarily poised. At only 7.5% alcohol, concentrated fruit and natural sweetness are balanced by tangy acidity and persistent salinity. It is sleek rather than heavy, with enormous length but no sense of excess.
These are wines capable of extraordinary evolution. With bottle age, the primary peach and citrus character will gradually move towards dried fruit, herbs, smoke and complex mineral notes, while the acidity provides the architecture for several decades of development.
Cellared Says
This is the grander of the two Auslesen and one of the standout wines in the 2024 Prüm release. It has more depth and stone-fruit richness than Himmelreich, yet still feels almost impossibly light for the concentration it carries. You can drink it young, but that almost misses the point—great Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese can become extraordinary after 15, 20 or even 30 years.
