Region: Northern Rhône
Sub Region: Saint-Joseph
Variety: Syrah
Country: France
Vintage: 2023
Jean-Baptiste Souillard produces nine Saint-Joseph reds, but this is the sole blended expression: an introduction to his remarkably precise, site-conscious interpretation of Northern Rhône Syrah.
The fruit comes principally from estate vineyards around Sarras and Andance in the central section of the appellation. Many parcels sit approximately 300 metres above sea level on east-facing slopes, with only a thin layer of decomposed granite over solid granite bedrock. The vines average around 40 years of age.
A large proportion of whole bunches undergo spontaneous fermentation and maceration in stainless steel before maturation in seasoned oak. The approach produces a cooler, more finely chiselled style than the richer, softer expression often associated with Saint-Joseph.
Fresh blackberry and raspberry meet violet, pepper, olive, smoked meat and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied and finely structured, with crunchy dark fruit, savoury spice and a long, mineral close.
This sits firmly in the modern, detail-driven school of Northern Rhône Syrah: aromatic, peppery and energetic, with old oak used for texture rather than flavour. There is plenty of Saint-Joseph character, but no excess weight or sweetness. Real precision here, cool fruit, firm and utterly delicious.
Drink now–2036.
“These influences provide a cooler fruit profile and more chiselled mouthfeel than the average Saint-Joseph.”
