Henschke The Wheelwright Shiraz 2021
Region: Eden Valley, South Australia
Variety: Shiraz
Vintage: 2021
The Wine
The Wheelwright honours Johann Christian Henschke, a stonemason and wheelwright who settled in the Barossa in the mid-1800s. The fruit comes from old-vine Shiraz planted in 1968 in the coolest, highest part of the Eden Valley.
The 2021 season delivered near-perfect conditions — cool nights, mild days and long ripening — giving the wine precision, elegance and fine tannins.
Open-fermented, matured for 18 months in fine French oak (20% new), The Wheelwright shows black cherry, blueberry, violets, sage, pepper and graphite with a long, mineral-etched finish.
Cellared Says
One of the most elegant expressions of Henschke Shiraz — perfumed, pure and beautifully structured.
Wine Reviews
Huon Hooke, The Real Review – 97 Points
“Magnificent perfume. Blackberry, spice, violet and crushed herbs. Great intensity with superb line and length.”
Halliday Wine Companion – 96 Points
“Deeply concentrated but wonderfully refined. Layers of dark fruit, pepper, earth and fine, persistent tannins.”
