The Wine

The 2022 Mount Edelstone marks the 70th vintage release of one of Australia’s longest consecutively produced single-vineyard wines. First bottled by Cyril Henschke in 1952, Mount Edelstone was a visionary wine at a time when most Australian red wine was blended or destined for fortified production.

The vineyard was planted in 1912 on the eastern slopes of Mount Edelstone in the Eden Valley. Its dry-grown, ungrafted Shiraz vines are rooted in ancient red-brown clay loam soils, derived from geological formations more than 500 million years old. The name “Edelstone” comes from the German “Edelstein”, meaning gemstone, a reference to the small yellow opals once found in the area.

The 2022 vintage captures Mount Edelstone in a particularly elegant and aromatic register. The 110-year-old vines provide concentration and depth, while the mild, late season gives the wine freshness, lift and finesse. It shows mulberry, blueberry, blackberry, plum, violets, sage, bay leaf, black pepper, crushed stone and fine cedar spice.

Matured for 20 months in French oak hogsheads, 8% new and 92% seasoned, this is Mount Edelstone with less opulence and more detail. It is bright, savoury, floral and beautifully composed, with the structure to age for decades.

Cellared Says

This is a landmark release, and not only because it celebrates 70 vintages of Mount Edelstone. It also captures the modern Henschke style beautifully: vineyard clarity, lifted aromatics, refined oak and superb balance.

A recent tasting of older Mount Edelstone vintages showed just how well this wine can age. The 2022 has all the vineyard signatures — sage, black fruit, spice, fine tannin and savoury complexity — but with a brightness and elegance that makes it feel especially complete. A personal Cellar buy this one, especially so as its my second childs birth year. One to keep.

Reviews

“The 2022 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz is bright, supple, spicy, savory and sweet. It is complex and shapely, persistent and delicate, with notes of bay leaf, raspberry seed, tapenade, wet moss and brine. This is a beautiful wine, and one of the most lovely Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shirazes I have tasted on release. I love the wines from the 2022 vintage; it may forever live in the shadow of the great 2021 vintage that came before it, but not in my heart.”  98 POINTS - ERIN LARKIN, THE WINE ADVOCATE

98 Points – Ray Jordan
“An elegant wine of great finesse and poise.” Ray Jordan praises its black olive, sage, bay leaf, pepper, brightness, energy and 40-year cellaring potential.

98 Points – Nick Ryan, The Australian

97 Points – Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
