The Wine
The 2022 Mount Edelstone marks the 70th anniversary of one of Australia's most historic single-vineyard wines. First produced as a standalone bottling in 1952 by Cyril Henschke, Mount Edelstone was among the very first Australian wines to champion the concept of single-vineyard provenance long before it became commonplace.
The vineyard itself is equally significant. Planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas on deep red-brown clay-loam soils over weathered rock, the dry-grown, ungrafted vines remain some of the oldest producing Shiraz vines in the world. Situated at approximately 400 metres elevation in Eden Valley, the site benefits from cooler growing conditions than neighbouring Barossa Valley vineyards, contributing to the wine's hallmark combination of concentration, elegance and longevity.
The 2022 growing season followed a cool, mild and relatively wet pattern, allowing for slow ripening and excellent flavour development. Hand-harvested fruit was fermented in traditional open-top fermenters before maturation in a combination of predominantly French oak barrels, carefully selected to support the vineyard character without overwhelming it.
Now under the stewardship of fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and viticulturist Prue Henschke, Mount Edelstone continues to stand as one of Australia's greatest expressions of Shiraz and a cornerstone of the Henschke legacy.
Presented in a special commemorative gift box, this 70th Anniversary Release celebrates seven decades of continuous production from one of Australia's most revered vineyards.
Cellared Says
Mount Edelstone often sits quietly in the shadow of Hill of Grace, but those who know the Henschke range understand just how special this wine is. The combination of old vines, a remarkable vineyard and a cooler Eden Valley setting creates a style of Shiraz that offers both power and refinement. For me, it remains one of Australia's greatest cellar wines and one of the smartest long-term buys in the country.
