Country: Austria
Vintage: 2016
The Wine
Family Reunion is one of Gut Oggau's rarest and most fascinating releases. Produced only in exceptional vintages and in minute quantities, it represents a meeting of generations within the Gut Oggau "family", blending fruit from several of the estate's oldest vineyard parcels to create a wine of remarkable depth and complexity.
The fruit comes from biodynamically farmed vineyards surrounding Oggau, planted on limestone, slate and gravel soils overlooking Lake Neusiedl. Many of the vines are over 50 years of age, naturally producing tiny yields of intensely flavoured fruit while maintaining exceptional freshness.
Fermentation is entirely spontaneous before extended maturation in large old oak casks. The wine spends several years in the cellar before release, allowing the components to harmonise naturally without fining or filtration.
The additional bottle age has transformed the wine, revealing layers of preserved citrus, orchard fruit, beeswax, spice and remarkable mineral complexity while retaining extraordinary energy.
Cellared Says
These are the sorts of wines that remind you why Gut Oggau has become such a cult producer. Mature Austrian white of this calibre is almost impossible to find, and Family Reunion offers a rare opportunity to experience just how gracefully these wines evolve.
Reviews
"A magnificent, deeply layered white with extraordinary texture, precision and persistence."
