The Wine

Few producers have reshaped perceptions of Austrian wine quite like Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe. When they revived the abandoned Gut Oggau estate in 2007, they inherited vineyards that had lain untouched for decades. Rather than modernising them, they embraced biodynamic farming, allowing each site to express itself with as little intervention as possible.

Atanasius is one of the original members of the famous Gut Oggau "family", sourced from limestone, slate and gravel soils surrounding the village of Oggau on the western shores of Lake Neusiedl. The old vines are farmed biodynamically, with horses used in the vineyard where practical and no synthetic chemicals employed.

Fermentation is entirely spontaneous using indigenous yeasts before maturation in large old oak casks. Nothing is added to manipulate the wine, and it is bottled without fining or filtration, preserving both texture and personality.

While considered one of the domaine's more approachable reds, Atanasius is anything but simple. It beautifully captures the freshness, energy and drinkability that have made Gut Oggau one of the world's most sought-after natural wine producers.

Cellared Says

Forget everything you think you know about "natural wine". Gut Oggau succeeds because these are, first and foremost, exceptional vineyards farmed bio-dynamically by brilliant vignerons. Atanasius is wonderfully vibrant and dangerously drinkable—a wine that disappears from the bottle far quicker than you'd expect. Also in Magnum which is a highly recommended format as a bottle is never quite enough

Reviews

"Fresh, energetic and beautifully balanced, with remarkable purity and drinkability."
