Greenock Creek Alice’s Shiraz 2016
Region: South Australia
Sub Region: Barossa Valley
Variety: Shiraz
Country: Australia
Vintage: 2016
Style: Full-bodied, richly concentrated red
The Wine
Greenock Creek established its reputation through intensely individual Barossa wines, with each vineyard bottled separately to preserve its character. The 2016 Alice’s belongs to the era of founders Michael and Annabelle Waugh, whose commitment to low-yielding vineyards helped build the estate’s international following.
Alice’s vineyard was planted in 1997 on the Radford Road property. Its soils combine ancient slaty siltstone with dark brown clay and loam. The vineyard takes its name from two women in the family: Annabelle’s mother and Michael’s aunt, both named Alice.
The 2016 is an emphatically rich expression of the site. Blackberry, black plum and liquorice are layered with vanilla, wood smoke, fennel and pepper. Its concentration is matched by substantial tannins, although the density of the fruit can make the structure feel surprisingly enveloped.
At a reported 16.5% alcohol, this is a distinctly powerful style, carrying the warmth and weight associated with this period of Greenock Creek. Cellar age adds interest to the interplay of fruit, oak and spice, making it particularly relevant to collectors who appreciate the estate’s full-flavoured, uncompromising character.
Cellared Says
This is a recommendation for someone who knows they enjoy big Barossa Shiraz. I’d choose it for the depth of flavour, the individuality of the producer and the opportunity to revisit Greenock Creek from the Waugh years.
I’d open a well-stored bottle now, serve it slightly cool and take my time. Its appeal is in that generous, almost enveloping richness, with enough savoury spice to keep the wine interesting as it unfolds.
