Giant Steps Bastard Hill Vineyard Chardonnay 2024 Magnum
Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria
Variety: Chardonnay
Country: Australia
Vintage: 2024
Size: Magnum 1.5L
The Wine
From one of the highest and most dramatic vineyard sites in the Upper Yarra, Bastard Hill is cropped at tiny yields and hand-picked at optimal ripeness. Wild-yeast fermented in French oak (25% new) and aged 10 months on lees, this is a wine of crystalline purity and striking structure.
Cellared Says
After tasting these wines yesterday at the launch event I can honestly say this is a spectacular wine. A luminous Chardonnay with Jasmine, verbena, lemon pith notes and crushed rock. Both delicate and powerful, with a fine mineral tension and persistent line and length. Some very seductive oak seasoning, and hazelnut, nougat and faint struck match. Comparable to great Corton-Charlemagne in its cut and drive. No really..Blime.
Wine Reviews
“Planted in 1987 in Gladysdale at 400 m by the trailblazing Ray Guerin for Hardys and purchased by Giant Steps in 2022. This is its first wine from the vineyard. And what a wine it is! A brilliant and pure scented bouquet of nashi, pink grapefruit, crushed rock, sea spray and honeysuckle. There’s a hint of fresh honeycomb, too. Incisive, pure and chalky on the palate, this concentrated yet light on its feet wine is reminiscent of good Corton‑Charlemagne. That it will age gracefully is a given.”
