Evening Land Seven Springs Chardonnay 2022
Region: Oregon
Sub Region: Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley
Variety: Chardonnay
Country: USA
Vintage: 2022
Style: Fresh textural dry white
The Wine
Seven Springs Chardonnay introduces one of the defining vineyards of Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills. Evening Land’s work at this estate has helped demonstrate the region’s potential for Chardonnay, alongside the Pinot Noir for which the Willamette Valley is more widely known.
The 2022 comes from a distinctive section of the vineyard’s south block. Its elevation, excellent drainage and exposure to cooling air through the Van Duzer Corridor help preserve freshness in the fruit. The estate farms organically with biodynamic principles, treating its individual blocks according to their particular conditions.
Whole bunches were pressed using a Champagne-style press cycle, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in used oak barriques and puncheons. The wine spent six months in barrel and a further month in stainless steel before bottling, an approach that preserves a direct connection to the fruit while developing texture.
The 2022 offers white peach, green apple, citrus and almond, with a chalky, saline edge and a generous mid-palate. Crisp acidity gives shape to the fruit and lees-derived breadth. This is an immediately engaging expression of the estate, with the energy for further short- to medium-term development.
Cellared Says
I’ve been buying Evening Land personally for a while, and the appeal runs right through the range. Seven Springs is a very good place to begin with the whites. The short élevage in used oak is a useful clue to the intent: the fruit and vineyard character have plenty of room to show themselves. There’s enough texture to keep a Chardonnay lover interested, with the freshness that makes another glass so appealing. A very easy wine to find an excuse to open.
