The Wine

La Source Chardonnay is a focussed selection from Evening Land’s Seven Springs estate in the Eola-Amity Hills. For the 2021 vintage, the fruit came from old Dijon-clone vines in the lower half of a narrow band of fourteen rows, where volcanic soils are scattered with iron-rich stones.

The precision of that selection is central to the wine’s identity. Evening Land’s approach combines organic farming and biodynamic principles with close attention to the differences between individual vineyard parcels. The result is a Chardonnay intended to express a particular part of Seven Springs.

The 2021 underwent indigenous fermentation in neutral 500-litre puncheons, followed by twelve months in Austrian oak and a further six months in tank. This extended maturation builds texture while giving the wine time to settle before bottling.

Yellow orchard fruit, citrus and stone fruit meet almond, biscuit and flinty, savoury detail. The palate combines breadth with a firm line of acidity and a saline finish. Michael Alberty awarded 96 points, while Eric Guido highlighted the wine’s savoury character, tension and development in bottle.

With several years from harvest, La Source is an appealing Chardonnay to explore now, with the depth and acidity to continue evolving through the medium term.

Cellared Says

Oregon’s Chardonnay deserves far more of the conversation, and La Source helps explain why. The old Dijon vines and long élevage in large Austrian oak give this wine a very particular shape. What interests me is the balance between generous fruit and that almost salty finish. There’s plenty here for someone who loves the texture of white Burgundy, with a clear sense of Seven Springs underneath it. I’d give this a little air and let it move around in the glass. Classy, thoughtful Chardonnay.

Reviews

“This crisp Chardonnay has all the acidity and minerality one could hope for.”
96 Points — Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast

“It’s savory to the core, with tantalizing acidity and masses of citrus and mineral-tinged pit fruits that saturate.”
93 Points — Eric Guido, Vinous
