Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2024
Region: Burgundy
Sub Region: Chablis Premier Cru — Montée de Tonnerre
Variety: Chardonnay
Country: France
Vintage: 2024
The Wine
Montée de Tonnerre is widely regarded as one of the greatest Premier Crus in Chablis. Situated on the right bank of the Serein beside the Grand Cru slope, its wines regularly approach Grand Cru quality. The soil is dominated by rocky, fossil-rich Kimmeridgian limestone, bringing the chalk, salinity and marine character for which the site is renowned.
Moreau-Naudet’s one-hectare holding lies within Chapelot, separated from Grand Cru Les Blanchots by only a narrow ravine. The vineyard comprises two contiguous plots: one planted approximately 50 years ago and a younger, recently replanted section. Its proximity to the Grands Crus gives the wine unusual depth, yet Chapelot generally expresses Montée de Tonnerre through elegance and shape rather than brute force.
The 2024 opens with beeswax, lemon oil, pear and Granny Smith apple, layered with oyster shell and flinty reduction. The palate is creamy and broad at first, bringing ripe apricot and quince, before tightening around a taut core of chalk and vivid acidity. It has greater depth and amplitude than most of the domaine’s other Premier Crus in 2024, yet the finish remains precise, mineral and controlled.
This was an extremely small and challenging Chablis vintage, shaped by frost, hail, rain and mildew. At the best addresses, however, low yields concentrated the remaining fruit while the cool season preserved acidity. Montée de Tonnerre’s exceptional position allowed Moreau-Naudet to produce a wine with both vintage energy and genuine site-derived substance.
Cellared Says
Montée de Tonnerre is often the answer when you want Grand Cru character without Grand Cru pricing. Moreau-Naudet’s Chapelot parcel sits almost against Les Blanchots, and that proximity shows in the wine’s depth, chalk and quiet authority. The 2024 leans towards elegance rather than power, but it has ample structure for the cellar. Give it three to five years, then watch it develop for another decade.
Reviews
“Delightful, with a creamy, rich texture and notes of ripe apricot and quince, edged with flinty mineral notes.”
94 points — Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
“Built around a taut, chalky core and offers slightly more depth and amplitude than Moreau’s other Premier Crus this year.”
