Variety: Chardonnay
Country: France
Vintage: 2024
The Wine
Moreau-Naudet has developed into one of the most distinctive estates in modern Chablis. The domaine was established following the marriage of Marie Naudet and René Moreau in 1950, although it did not begin estate bottling until 1991. Stéphane Moreau took control in 1993 and transformed the domaine through low yields, organic-focused farming, hand harvesting, natural fermentations and unusually long maturation.
Following Stéphane’s sudden death in 2016, his wife Virginie continued the work with remarkable resolve. Their daughter Nell has now joined her at the estate. La Revue du Vin de France has awarded Moreau-Naudet two stars, with only Raveneau and Dauvissat ranked more highly in Chablis.
The village Chablis is assembled from approximately 30 parcels, principally in Préhy and Courgis, with additional vineyards in Chablis and Chichée. Most vines are between 20 and 30 years old, and fruit from the youngest plantings is sold rather than included. The grapes are gently pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in tank on fine lees for around 18 to 20 months—far longer than is usual at village level.
The difficult 2024 season brought frost, hail, persistent rain and intense mildew pressure across Chablis, dramatically reducing the crop. The surviving fruit produced a classical style with modest alcohol, vivid acidity and pronounced mineral character. Lemon peel, spring flowers, crisp pear and zesty yellow citrus lead into a textured but racy palate, finishing with oyster shell, chalk and saline persistence.
Cellared Says
This is why Moreau-Naudet’s village Chablis has such a loyal following. It delivers the drive and refreshment expected of Chablis, but with considerably more texture and lees-derived complexity than most wines at this level. The 2024 is cooler, tighter and more mineral than the generous 2023—brilliant drinking now, but with enough substance to develop through the early 2030s.
Reviews
“Un 2024 d’une précision remarquable.”
91 points — La Revue du Vin de France
“Very long. Energising, delicious wine—yes!”
