Domaine Moreau-Naudet Chablis 1er Cru Forêts 2024
Region: Burgundy
Sub Region: Chablis Premier Cru — Forêts
Variety: Chardonnay
Country: France
Vintage: 2024
The Wine
Forêts is a historic sub-climat within the broader Montmains Premier Cru, positioned high on the slope with a southeast-facing exposure. Stéphane Moreau regarded it as one of the greatest terroirs in Chablis, and it has long produced some of the domaine’s most complete, persistent wines.
Moreau-Naudet farms just under two hectares across two parcels. The first contains approximately 60-year-old vines immediately beside Vincent Dauvissat’s holding. The second, planted around 25 years ago, sits alongside a small parcel belonging to Domaine Raveneau. It is an exceptional piece of Chablis real estate, even before the domaine’s exacting vineyard work is considered.
Organic-focused farming, hand harvesting, natural fermentation and long lees maturation give the wine a distinctly Moreau-Naudet combination of texture and mineral energy. Rather than pursuing the most austere possible expression of Chablis, Virginie Moreau allows ripe fruit and extended élevage to build depth while preserving the site’s saline character.
The 2024 opens with crisp pear, green apple and lemon oil, followed by freshly baked bread, verbena, star anise and more exotic touches of passionfruit and kiwi. The palate is silky and ample, with considerable ripeness for the vintage, but racy acidity and a saline finish prevent it from feeling heavy. It is already complex, yet clearly built for further development.
Cellared Says
Forêts may be the most compelling bottle in the Moreau-Naudet Premier Cru range. It combines a first-rate site, exceptional neighbouring parcels and meaningful vine age with the domaine’s long, patient élevage. The 2024 has more fruit and texture than its cool-vintage origins might suggest, but the finish remains finely cut and unmistakably Chablis. A serious cellar candidate.
Reviews
“This is consistently among my favourite bottlings from this cellar.”
94 points — Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
“Ample and bright… framed by racy acids and a saline finish.”
91–93 points — Kristaps Karklins, The Wine Advocate
