The Wine

Olivier Lamy’s reputation rests on an extraordinary level of attention in the vineyard. Since taking over the family domaine in 1995, he has continually refined planting densities, canopy management and fruit selection. His small production of Pinot Noir benefits from that same exacting approach.

Clos des Gravières Rouge comes from a tiny 0.28-hectare parcel within the clos, with vines more than 50 years old. Planting density has increased to around 20,000 vines per hectare. Shoots are managed through tressage, wrapping rather than trimming the growing tips, while small bunches and berries provide concentrated raw material.

Whole-bunch fermentation is an important part of the 2023’s character, contributing aromatic lift, spice and a finely textured structure. The resulting wine combines the flesh of the vintage with vivid acidity and a persistent, savoury finish.

Raspberry, wild strawberry and cranberry are accompanied by floral perfume, crushed-stone nuances and gentle stem spice. There is an appealing combination of fruit clarity and substance, with tannins that give the wine definition and a convincing case for further bottle development.

Cellared Says

Lamy’s reds deserve attention, and this is a bottle I’d recommend to Burgundy drinkers who enjoy looking closely at the work behind a wine. The vineyard detail here is remarkable, and the combination of perfume, fruit purity and structure makes a persuasive argument for Santenay.

I’d give the 2023 a little time. My preference would be to start opening bottles from around 2028, then follow them over the following years. It feels like a rewarding wine to discover patiently. Tasted against some very high ranking grand Cru’s and this was still amongst them at a fraction of the price. Excellent.

Reviews

“…the best delineation and purity, perfumed raspberry and wild strawberry, white flowers and crushed stone.”
