The Wine
Domaine de Trévallon occupies the limestone-strewn northern slopes of the Alpilles, between Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Saint-Étienne-du-Grès. Éloi Dürrbach planted the first vines in 1973, choosing equal proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah—a radical decision that established one of France’s most singular and enduring fine wines. Today, the estate is led by his daughter Ostiane, supported by Antoine and Isoline Dürrbach.
The red vineyards are spread across around 20 distinct terroirs, where Cretaceous limestone is mixed with clay, marl, sand, pebbles and fractured scree. Surrounded by woodland, garrigue, pines and olive trees, the organically farmed parcels retain freshness despite the Provençal climate.
The 2023 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah. Faced with another warm, dry season, the estate harvested approximately two weeks earlier than usual to protect acidity, aromatic lift and the moderate alcohol that has always separated Trévallon from heavier southern French reds.
The varieties are fermented separately as whole bunches, without destemming, cultured yeast or sulphur additions during fermentation. The wine matures for more than two years in large foudres and seasoned barrels, remaining on its lees with minimal racking. Light sulphur additions are made during élevage before fining with fresh egg white and bottling without filtration.
The 2023 shows the cooler, more energetic side of Trévallon: floral cassis, mint and Provençal herbs, with vibrant acidity, whole-bunch texture and a long, chalky mineral finish.
Cellared Says
Trévallon does not taste like Bordeaux, the Rhône or conventional Provence; it occupies its own category. The 2023 is particularly compelling for its freshness and restraint, with the early harvest and whole-bunch fermentation giving the wine extraordinary energy. A genuine French icon that deserves long-term cellaring.
