The Wine

Clos de l'Arlot is one of Burgundy's great historic monopoles and the spiritual heart of Domaine de l'Arlot. Enclosed by stone walls since the eighteenth century, the vineyard lies immediately below the domaine in Prémeaux-Prissey, where a unique combination of shallow Comblanchien limestone and limestone scree produces a style of Nuits-Saint-Georges unlike any other. While the appellation is often associated with power and structure, Clos de l'Arlot has long been admired for its perfume, silkiness and remarkable finesse.

Since AXA Millésimes acquired the estate in 1987, and particularly under Géraldine Godot's stewardship, Domaine de l'Arlot has become one of Burgundy's benchmark biodynamic producers. Organic farming commenced in 2003 before full biodynamic conversion in 2014. The emphasis today is firmly on transparency of terroir through healthier soils, gentler extraction and increasingly refined élevage.

The vineyard sits on a naturally free-draining limestone slope where the thin soils encourage deep root systems and naturally restricted yields. Fruit is hand harvested and rigorously sorted before a proportion of whole bunches—carefully judged according to the vintage—is retained for fermentation. Indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction and maturation in French oak barrels (around one-third new) preserve the vineyard's floral perfume and mineral precision without masking its identity.

Compared with the more muscular Clos des Forêts Saint Georges, Clos de l'Arlot is the more elegant and immediately seductive wine of the estate. It is often the first to reveal its charm in youth, yet possesses the balance and structure to evolve gracefully over two decades or more.

Cellared Says

If Clos des Forêts is the powerhouse of the domaine, Clos de l'Arlot is its thoroughbred. The perfume is haunting, the tannins impossibly fine, and there is a sense of effortless balance that only truly great vineyards seem able to produce. It may sit in the shadow of some more famous Côte de Nuits names, but in the right vintage, it comfortably plays in the same league. Tasted May 2026 in Hong Kong in a 10 year vertical, youthful sure, but already sublimely formed and will only get better. Excellent.
