Domaine Charvin “Damon” Côtes du Rhône 2023
Region: Rhône Valley
Sub Region: Côtes du Rhône
Variety: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre
Country: France
Vintage: 2023
The Wine
Laurent Charvin is one of the Rhône Valley’s great traditionalists, best known for his benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Damon is sourced from younger vine material and parcels just outside the Châteauneuf appellation, farmed organically and handled with the same philosophy as the flagship wines.
The blend is Grenache dominant (80-90%) with supporting Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with whole bunches in concrete vats using indigenous yeasts. Extraction is gentle, with minimal intervention throughout élevage and no new oak. Maturation takes place in concrete to preserve purity, texture and freshness.
Unlike many modern Southern Rhône reds, Damon is built around drinkability and energy rather than extraction or sweetness. The emphasis is on bright fruit, spice, garrigue and fine tannin.
Cellared Says
This is exactly the sort of Rhône I love drinking at home. Honest, energetic and dangerously easy to open. It massively overdelivers for the level. The nose is so compelling you can’t keep it out of the glass. Massive drinkability despite its high ABV, that’s seamlessly integrated into the cherry ripe fruit and svelte tannins. Life affirming Rhone.
Reviews
No formal critic scores widely published yet for the 2023 release.
Previous vintages regularly attract praise for their purity, freshness and value relative to Charvin’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottlings.
