The Wine
Côte de Léchet sits on the left bank of the Serein, rising above the villages of Milly and Chablis. Its steep, predominantly south-east-facing slope catches the morning sun but remains cooler than many right-bank sites, helping preserve acidity and giving the vineyard its reputation for particularly steely, mineral Chardonnay.
The shallow soils contain a high proportion of exposed Kimmeridgian limestone. While the neighbouring Vaillons sector can produce broader and more floral wines, Côte de Léchet is typically tighter and more linear, built around citrus, iodine, chalk and saline length.
Daniel Dampt vinifies the wine in stainless steel, allowing the vineyard rather than oak to provide its texture and complexity. The 2023 has greater volume than the village Chablis, but retains the incisive acidity and mineral backbone that distinguish this Premier Cru.

Côte de Léchet is one of the smartest Premier Cru purchases in Chablis. It may lack the fame of Montée de Tonnerre, but it delivers exactly the qualities serious Chablis drinkers chase: oyster-shell minerality, citrus drive and the ability to gain complexity without losing freshness. This has breadth, power and a bit of swagger about it. Lovely stuff from the great, for whites, 2023 vintage.
